The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to restore petrol subsidy and introduce a minimum monthly wage of N500,000 for Nigerian workers if elected president in 2027.
Sowore made the declaration in a post on his official X handle on Monday, while defending his proposed N500,000 monthly living wage.
He said attempts to challenge the proposal with statistics would not change his position, insisting that Nigerian workers deserved wages capable of meeting their basic needs.
“Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage of at least N500,000 monthly. We will also restore the petrol subsidy,” Sowore said.
He added that “workers deserve wages they can actually live on.”
Sowore’s position comes amid renewed debate over the future of petrol subsidy following its removal by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Other presidential candidates have also presented different proposals on fuel pricing. African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Atiku Abubakar has proposed a form of subsidy targeted at domestic refineries rather than a return to the previous import-based arrangement.
Meanwhile, other candidates, including Peter Obi and Seyi Makinde, have opposed a return to the former subsidy regime, with Makinde proposing cheaper domestic crude pricing for Nigerian refineries as an alternative approach.
The competing proposals have placed petrol pricing, workers’ wages and the broader cost of living among the issues featuring in the emerging 2027 presidential campaign.
