The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government on Friday, while extending warm greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora.
In a statement signed electronically by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the minister urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the virtues of compassion, humility and service to humanity.
Tunji-Ojo said the values embodied in the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad remain relevant to the country’s quest for peace, unity and sustainable development.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
He encouraged Nigerians, regardless of religious or ethnic affiliation, to embrace these values and use the celebration as an opportunity to pray for peace, national unity and greater cohesion.
The minister also called on citizens to celebrate responsibly, urging restraint, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence throughout the holiday.
While wishing Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid, Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and promoting peace across the country.
The statement was dated August 21, 2026.
