The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has joined Nigerians across the country in commemorating Democracy Day, paying tribute to the heroes and heroines of the June 12 struggle whose courage, sacrifices, and steadfast commitment to justice helped shape Nigeria's democratic journey.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, the National Chairperson, NAWOJ, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, describes June 12 as a powerful symbol of the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people. She notes that the day serves as a reminder that democracy can only flourish when citizens remain committed to the principles of freedom, justice, equity, and accountable leadership.
She poaits that the significance of June 12 extends beyond its historical importance, as it continues to inspire Nigerians to safeguard democratic values and work collectively toward a more inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
Comrade Ibrahim paid tribute to those who made immense sacrifices in the struggle for democracy, including journalists who risked their lives in defence of truth, press freedom, and the people's right to information.
“Today, we honour the memory of all those who paid the ultimate price in the fight for democracy. We celebrate the brave men and women who stood against oppression and injustice, as well as the countless citizens whose sacrifices paved the way for democratic governance in Nigeria,” she said.
While acknowledging the progress Nigeria has made since the return to democratic rule, the NAWOJ Chairperson emphasizes that more efforts are needed to ensure that democracy delivers on its promise for all citizens, particularly women and other underrepresented groups.
She stresses that women remain indispensable partners in national development and should be given greater opportunities to participate actively in governance, leadership, and decision-making at all levels.
“The June 12 struggle was fundamentally about giving citizens a voice and ensuring that everyone has a stake in the future of the nation. As we celebrate this historic day, we must recommit ourselves to building a democracy that is inclusive, participatory, and reflective of the diversity of our society. Women must not be left behind in this process,” she stated.
Comrade Ibrahim further reaffirms NAWOJ’s commitment to promoting democratic ideals, defending freedom of expression, advancing gender equality, and amplifying the voices of women across all sectors of society.
She calls on government at all levels, political leaders, civil society organisations, and citizens to work together to dismantle barriers limiting women's participation in governance and leadership. According to her, sustainable national development cannot be achieved when a significant portion of the population is excluded from decision-making processes.
As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day 2026, NAWOJ urges Nigerians to uphold the values for which the heroes of June 12 fought and sacrificed, and to continue working toward a nation founded on justice, equity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.
The association maintains that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s democracy heroes will never be forgotten, noting that their courage, patriotism, and commitment to democratic ideals will continue to inspire future generations in the pursuit of a stronger, more united, and truly democratic nation.
