Government deploys scientific officers to investigate substance suspected to be linked to about 30 deaths
The Ondo State Government has ordered the immediate ban on the sale and distribution of unverified alcoholic drinks and other unapproved substances across the state following the reported deaths of about 30 people in the Odigbo area.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, on Saturday, the government says the directive was aimed at preventing further loss of lives and stopping the unfortunate incident from spreading to other parts of the state.
The State Ministry of Health has commenced investigations into the substance suspected to be responsible for the deaths, with scientific officers deployed to the affected communities to determine the exact substance involved.
The government said the investigation would help establish the nature of the substance involved and guide further action.
Aiyedatiwa Govt Moves to Prevent Further Deaths
Under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the state government said it was taking every necessary step to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and protect residents from further harm.
The government assured residents that it was leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to identify the source of the suspected substance and prevent additional casualties.
Residents Warned Against Unverified Products
Residents across the state were advised to stop purchasing or consuming alcoholic drinks and other substances whose sources or regulatory status cannot be verified.
The government particularly warned against products packaged in sachets or bottles that do not have the approval of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Sellers and distributors were equally directed to desist from purchasing, selling or making available for public consumption any product whose source, content or regulatory status is uncertain.
The government warned that anyone found violating the directive would face the full weight of the law.
Security Agencies Ordered to Act
According to Ajanaku, security agencies have been directed to swiftly clamp down on the sale and distribution of illegal and unapproved products across Ondo State.
Residents were also encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious products, sales outlets or activities to the appropriate authorities.
The government stressed that the protection of lives and the health of residents remained a collective responsibility, urging everyone to cooperate with health and security officials as investigations continue.
The directive comes against the backdrop of the reported deaths in parts of Odigbo Local Government Area, which have sparked concern among residents and prompted authorities to intensify efforts to determine what caused the deaths.
