The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has applauded the gradual transformation taking place in the state's media sector while calling on both the Ondo State and Federal Governments to accelerate infrastructure development and take proactive measures against flooding.
The position formed part of the resolutions reached at the Union's monthly congress held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, Pen Crescent, Alagbaka, Akure.
The congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, attracted members from all chapels who deliberated extensively on issues affecting the media, governance, infrastructure, security, the economy, environment and the welfare of journalists.
Members expressed satisfaction with the performance of the current NUJ leadership, particularly its commitment to protecting members' welfare and the ongoing beautification of the Press Centre. The congress also commended the leadership for its continuous support to the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), which has enabled them to organise programmes including children's events and sporting competitions.
On the media sector, the congress praised the noticeable improvements at the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) Media Group. It, however, urged the Ondo State Government to ensure the state's television station is carried on cable networks to expand its reach, improve service delivery and enhance career opportunities for media professionals.
Infrastructure development also featured prominently during the deliberations. While acknowledging the ongoing road construction projects across the state, the union expressed concern over the slow pace of work on major routes, including the Akungba-Ikare, Okitipupa-Igbokoda and Akure-Idanre roads, urging contractors to expedite completion.
The congress equally described the ongoing construction of the flyover on Oba Adesida Road in Akure as a laudable project but appealed to the state government to improve alternative routes, especially Arakale Road, to reduce the traffic challenges currently being experienced by motorists.
The union further commended the Federal Government for ongoing reconstruction and dualisation of major highways, including the Ilesa-Akure-Owo-Benin Road, Akure-Ado Ekiti Road and Akure-Ondo-Ore Road. However, it lamented the poor condition of federal roads serving Ondo North, particularly within the Akoko axis, and urged federal lawmakers and political appointees from the area to facilitate their rehabilitation.
On environmental concerns, the congress described recent flooding incidents in parts of the state as unfortunate and called on both the state and local governments to adopt preventive measures rather than reacting after disasters occur.
The congress also paid glowing tribute to veteran journalist and former Managing Director of The Hope Newspaper, Sir Ademola Adetula, who recently passed away just days before his 74th birthday. Members observed a minute's silence in his honour, describing him as one of Ondo State's finest journalists and praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and comfort for his family.

The statutory Congress held at the NUJ Press Centre was well attended by members across all chapels and presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite.
