The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Biodun Oyebanji, winner of the Ekiti State governorship election held on Saturday.
Oyebanji secured a second term in office after polling 319,224 votes, defeating his closest challengers, Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 40,533 votes, and Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who polled 12,872 votes.
The Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, announced the result in the early hours of Sunday at INEC’s headquarters on Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti.
Declaring the result, Oladiji said Oyebanji had met all constitutional requirements and was duly returned elected.
According to INEC, the APC candidate won convincingly across the state’s 16 local government areas.
Election statistics released by the commission showed that 988,251 voters were registered, while 384,940 voters were accredited for the exercise.
A total of 382,109 votes were cast, out of which 375,777 were valid votes, underscoring a significant voter turnout in the keenly contested election.
