Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has reaffirmed that the country neither possesses nuclear weapons nor has ever pursued a nuclear weapons programme.

Ibrahim made the declaration while addressing the United Nations General Assembly at the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session in New York, where he reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to international efforts aimed at ending nuclear-weapon testing.

The Nigerian envoy, who also serves as Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration, called for a review of Article 2(7) of the UN Charter, arguing that the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of states should not be used to prevent international action against countries that conduct nuclear weapons tests or possess weapons of mass destruction.

Representing the position of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ibrahim said Nigeria had established institutions and regulatory mechanisms to monitor and address issues relating to nuclear activities and weapons of mass destruction.

He identified the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission as one of the key institutions overseeing the country’s nuclear-related activities and regulatory framework.

According to him, Nigeria’s commitment to nuclear safety and global security is also reflected in its cooperation with countries across different regions, including Russia, China, France, South Korea and the United States.

Ibrahim said President Tinubu had directed him to reaffirm Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen international partnerships aimed at eliminating nuclear-weapon testing from the global system.

He also expressed Nigeria’s support for the position of the African Group and congratulated member states on the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The envoy noted that Africa remains a nuclear-weapon-free zone and has consistently rejected nuclear explosive testing on the continent.

He urged UN member states to intensify efforts towards the complete elimination of nuclear testing, stressing that such action remained essential to building a safer world and reducing the threat posed by nuclear weapons.

Ibrahim further commended the international community for the progress recorded over the past three decades in the global campaign against nuclear testing, while calling for sustained commitment to achieving a world free from the dangers of nuclear weapons.
