Spain are world champions once again after defeating Argentina 1–0 in a dramatic final that was ultimately dominated by the European giants.
The victory secured Spain’s second world title after a one-sided contest in which Argentina struggled to create meaningful opportunities, managing just two shots—both coming in the closing stages of the match.
The decisive moment arrived early in the second half of extra time when Ferran Torres produced a composed finish to finally break Argentina’s resistance.
Spain had controlled the game for long periods but appeared set to face a tense penalty shootout after Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off shortly before the end of regulation time for a second bookable offence.
With Argentina reduced to 10 men, Spain intensified the pressure and eventually found the breakthrough through a brilliant combination between two substitutes.
Pedro Porro delivered a dangerous cross into the box, Nico Williams headed the ball back across goal from the far post, and Torres calmly finished past Emiliano Martínez to give Spain the lead.
Argentina had spent much of the match defending deep, and Fernández’s dismissal made the task even more difficult.
Spain dominated possession and created the bulk of the chances, registering 20 shots during the match. However, they were repeatedly frustrated by Argentina’s defence and the impressive Martínez, who produced two important saves around the end of normal time.
Mikel Merino also came close to extending Spain’s lead in extra time but headed narrowly wide.
Argentina were forced to wait until deep into extra time before registering their first attempt. Lionel Messi’s effort was blocked, while a dangerous cross shortly afterwards caused brief concern in the Spanish defence.
Giuliano Simeone then had a late opportunity but fired over the bar as Argentina desperately searched for an equaliser.
